Is this you?
Morning anxiety can be a huge problem for many people, and can severely impact their daily life. In fact, almost all of us have experienced some form of morning anxiety at some stage in our life. It can get to the point, however, where it makes it almost impossible to start the day with any kind of confidence or clarity.
The key symptom of morning anxiety is feeling a sense of severe dread or unease upon waking up, or within a second or two after waking. This may manifest as a general feeling of acute anxiety or specific worries about the day ahead. Often this dread has no rational explanation.
Morning anxiety is often accompanied by a crushing sense of overwhelm, that things are too much, too fast, and too difficult. This makes it paralysingly difficult to make choices or decisions, or even to perform everyday morning tasks.
Accompanying symptoms include physical discomfort, such as a racing heart, sweaty palms, extreme tension, or a knot in the stomach. There may also be a feeling of dizziness or nausea. These physical symptoms can be distressing and contribute to the overall feeling of anxiety.
It's not your fault.
None of this is your fault! We can feel real shame at not being able to 'cope'. "Why can't I just get up like everyone else?" "Why is this happening to me?" "Is there something wrong with me?"
Morning anxiety is your brain in unconscious mode, trying to keep you safe, but feeling unsafe and unable to face the day. It won't respond to rational thought or willpower, it is just trying to look after you. Morning anxiety is about feeling unsafe, and that is definitely not your fault!
There is good news! Fortunately, there is a whole load of stuff we can do to make our brains in unconscious mode feel safe, confident, and happy to get on with the day.
